John Kenneth Galbraith
I have never written to Dear Abby, and I probably never will. However, I feel the need to communicate with my "fictional" muse --- "Dear Addy".
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN APPROVED BY. . .WELL. . . ME.
Did you happen to catch the Presidential debate last night? Did you? Did you? I can only say that it
was like watching a train wreck happening right before my eyes. You know. . . like when something so
horrible is occurring that you can't bear to look, yet you are unable to take your eyes off it.
I cannot express how embarrassed I was for both participants. This election will certainly go down
in history as the ugliest, nastiest, mud-slinging event ever. I can't count the times I cringed and put
put my hands over my face in dismay. The stupid statements coming from these people who are
supposed to be the cream of the crop, vying for the position of Commander in Chief of our great
country, is appalling.
The general opinion is that other countries are scratching their heads and quietly laughing at what
is playing out in the United States. And this has been going on even before the candidates began
campaigning. We have always been known as the first nation, the top dog, the best of the best. But
our leaders had decided to turn us into a third-world country. Instead of taking care of business and
making sure that we stay strong and on top, everything is headed for the poop shoot.
Greed has become the Number One problem, as our leaders forget about taking care of our
soldiers and veterans (they should be getting the absolute best of everything while serving and also
after leaving the military). Our mentally impaired citizens are being kicked out of the few facilities that
were available, and many mentally disturbed people are ending up in jail for doing things that they
wouldn't if they were still placed in a safe environment.
It does make me proud when I see all those wonderful people around this community helping
others during the flood that we are experiencing locally. There are lots of decent, hard-working
individuals that make me proud to be an American.
But when I see Government playing with trillions of dollars and not tending to business as they
should, it is discouraging. Isn't it interesting that our leaders in the past have dipped into
Social Security funds, telling us that since there was such an over-abundance built up, they would
"borrow" some money for a time. They simply dropped an I.O.U into the till and walked away, until the
next time when they needed more cash and they came back to "borrow" once again. The I.O.U.s have
piled up and the cash stash has dwindled. Then they try to tell senior citizens that they are lucky to be
getting the amount that arrives every month and should be happy that the funds have not run out yet.
Hey, Social Security is what workers have paid into and they are ENTITLED to receive it. It is not some
benefit that the government doles out just to be nice to Americans.
So, Dear Addy, can you tell me how I should vote come election day? What should I do to help
make American better?
Aggitated, Confused, and Upset
Her response follows.
Beats the hell out of me.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL
