ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE!

                                    Ellie from the movie "UP"

The funeral went quite well. I got to see a lot of people that I hadn't for quite a while. Some  special groups (hey, I was happy to see EVERYONE - I just don't get to see these people very often) that I was particularly happy to see were uncle Everett Paul and aunt Ann from Georgia, aunt Pat and cousins Laurie (and husband Lindy) and Lisa, and the Schoneman family. Jean Schoneman was Mom's best friend for years, Vern was such a nice guy, and Mary and Mark were kids we played with all the time, way out in the country. They have been in my life since I was five years old, and they mean a lot to me. Mary told me she is going to Rochester to get a spot in her brain checked (possible tumor). Hope all goes well. She and I looked at each other and asked, "What the heck is going on with US?" as we looked at her 90-something year old parents who are very lively and fit.  :)

I was talking to the cousins, and Laurie and Lisa decided that the name for my new hairpiece should be ROXIE. I like that. It sounds a little flirty, and yet kind of tough-girl, plus it is another "R" name! I was happy to see them. With everyone's lives being so busy, we do not get to see each other often, but when we do, it always a pleasure to be around them. Really nice people.!

It was a comfort to see Everett and Ann again. Our Everett is an eloquent speaker and also a writer who is busy working on a book. They are both good people and I was  happy to see them again.

The flowers were wonderful, Jill and Ken did a fabulous job doing the picture boards (which, frankly, is not an easy task to do!), nephew Andrew went and got the cookies from Hy-Vee and saved us a trip. The toy tractor display was really nice, Everyone (especially the men) enjoyed looking at them. We were all grateful for the nice weather. It made everything easier to bear. Dad looked great in his new denim bibbies and green plaid shirt. I think he would have been happy with our choice. The pastor did a nice job  speaking, and also  read a piece by Paul Harvey, describing all the jobs that a farmer does. I loved it.  Everett also spoke and said a prayer and we really appreciated that.  And I was especially happy to see my Little Ma, Nina and Zonna who are always there to support us. I had no doubt that they would help us through the day. (Thanks, Nina, for feeding us supper so I wouldn't have to cook when we got home).

Sister Sandy was ill the night before, but she made it to the funeral services. What a time to be feeling really bad, but she toughed it out.

I was thinking that we have lost three of the Paul "boys" in just the last few years. First Ernie, then Bob, and now Dad. Then I thought of the two new little Paul boys that we have gotten in the last few years,  just in my immediate family -- Ray and Emerson Paul.  Yup, the generations go on.

So, now it is time to move forward. Wednesday is my last chemo. I am going forward with a little more confidence, that I will get through it without tossing my cookies - but seriously, if that is all that a person has to worry about, then life is pretty easy. I will concentrate during those icky "ten minutes" of the push they give me, and try to not to think how awful popsicles or ice chunks are. Ten minutes. Big deal. (P.S. pray for me -underneath everything, I'm still a wimp)   :)

Here's the poem "CLOSE THE GATE"  if you are interested in reading it.

FOR THIS ONE FARMER, THE WORRIES ARE OVER.

LIE DOWN AND REST YOUR HEAD.

YOUR TIME HAS BEEN - - - AND STRUGGLES ENOUGH,

PUT THE TRACTOR IN THE SHED.

YEARS WERE NOT EASY - - - MANY DOWNRIGHT HARD,

BUT YOUR FAITH IN GOD TRANSCENDED.

PUT AWAY YOUR TOOLS AND SLEEP IN PEACE.

THE FENCES HAVE ALL BEEN MENDED.

YOU RAISED A FINE FAMILY, WORKED THE LAND WELL

AND ALWAYS FOLLOWED THE SON.

HANG UP YOUR SHOVEL INSIDE OF THE BARN - - -

YOUR WORK HERE ON EARTH IS DONE.

A FAITH FEW POSSESS, LED YOUR JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE  - - -

OFTEN A JAGGED AND STONY WAY.

THE SUN IS SETTING, THE CATTLE ARE ALL BEDDED,

AND HERE NOW IS THE END OF YOUR DAY.

YOUR LOVE OF GOD'S SOIL HAS PASSED ON TO YOUR KIN:

THE STORIES FLOW LIKE FINE WINE.

WASH OFF YOUR WORK BOOTS IN THE PUDDLE LEFT BY

BLESSED RAIN - -  - ONE FINAL TIME.

YOU ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT THE GOOD LORD WOULD PROVIDE,

AND HE ALWAYS HAD SOMEHOW.

TAKE OFF YOUR GLOVES AND PUT THEM DOWN.

NO MORE SWEAT AND WORRY FOR YOU NOW.

YOUR LABOR IS DONE, YOUR HOME IS HEAVEN

NO MORE MUST YOU WAIT.

YOUR LEGACY LIVES ON, YOUR LOVE OF THE LAND - - -

AND WE WILL CLOSE THE GATE.

                                                              GOD BLESS YOU ALL

EVERYTHING IS FALLING INTO PLACE

YOU'RE MAD, BONKERS, OFF YOUR HEAD!   BUT I'LL TELL YOU A SECRET . . . ALL THE BEST PEOPLE ARE!"

Alice Kingsley  from "Alice in Wonderland"

I guess I am quoting from a lot of children's movies or books, but they seem to describe how things are going lately.

When talking to my sisters and brother Ken, we are all agreeing that everything that we have planned for the funeral tomorrow has fallen wonderfully  into place. A few have worried that things are going too smoothly for us, but I say "HOORAY", we'll take it! We are all trying to take the attitude "Whatever it is, it is and all the worrying in the world can't change it."  The weather is supposed to be nice (the day of Mother's funeral it rained buckets).

I couldn't get my preacher for the service, so Murdoch's arranged for Pastor John Albertson from Faith Lutheran to speak. Jill and I met with him yesterday, and he offered up a brilliant poem for me to read after the eulogy. It's called "CLOSE THE GATE", and it is definitely for a farmer's services. I'll try and get it on the blog in the next day or so.

Uncle Everett and Ann have flown in from Georgia. There is only him and aunts Kate and Alberta left from that clan. It will be good to see them all, even if it takes a situation like this to get  us together.

After leaving Jill yesterday, I went to the salon and purchased another "Roschelle", but in a little deeper color. I had had to order the first wig, and this one was in stock, in the same style, just darker colored. Roschelle was getting a little tired of being worn every day, and the wind has just been horrible to her. (oddly enough, people talk about Roschelle like she's a real person). See what I mean about people being mad and bonkers?  :)  When Jeffrey, the salon owner, was assisting me with the wigs, he just snatched each one off of my head and tried another.  It didn't seem to bother him that I looked like an 80-year old plucked chicken. I guess he's seen it all, with the brisk wig business that he does. Anyway, I appreciated that he didn't flinch or faint at the sight of me. I can't imagine how long it is going to take to grow my hair back. After Wednesday, I'm charging full speed ahead and concentrating very hard on producing a nice "crop" this year. Sister Judy has a friend whose hair grew back dark and curly. I don't care if it is orange and half-curly/half straight. I'll take it. I do find that wearing a night cap while sleeping really does keep my head warm and comfortable, and makes me feel somewhat presentable. There  is no way in the world I would just go around bald. You really have to have the right shaped head and the right hutzpah attitude to pull that off.

Jenna gave me some of Alec's school pictures. I asked her what in the world was going on with his nose! Evidently he decided to flare his nostrils when the picture was taken. He even showed me how he does it. What a character! My Abby likes to spread her toes out, which makes them look like a hand since her toes are so long and thin, She loves doing that just to creep me out and hear me holler "EWWWW!".

My Dan will be here tonight. He is one of the pallbearers. It's quite a drive, but I'm glad he is coming. He'll also get to see the girls. My dad always talked so well about Cate and Abby. They kinda got to him.

I need to sort out some more pieces of Dad's John Deere tractor collection. We are doing a display near the casket with some of his J.D. stuff. We even  thought of bringing in a bale of hay to be part of the display. I believe my friend, Sue Becker, and her family did that when  her beloved son, Nic, passed away. They did a magnificent job displaying all of his farm awards and pictures, and such. It really made an impression on everyone. (Nic's grave is just a few steps away from where Dad will be  buried). Whenever I go to the cemetery to change the flower arrangements for Mom's grave, I always step over there and make sure Nic's flowers and stuff hasn't tipped over and everything is nice and straightened up

Well, better get crack-a-lackin' and get some stuff done. I also need to go exchange some pantyhose I got yesterday at Kohl's. I wanted off-black and I came with  one pair Granite and thje other pair Flesh colored, neither color I want to wear.  Sigh.  By the way, have you seen the price of hose lately??????  Nuts.

                                                                 GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

    Janene...

... was diagnosed with breast cancer on November 11, 2013. This is a place for all of the people who love and care about her to get the information about her treatment and her personal experience of kicking cancer's ass, (sometimes from her daughter's perspective). It's hard to stand by and not be able to do anything to help. Writing gives my mom an outlet and allows both of us to share information during this time. Therefore, we blog :)
